Spotlight: l’Orchestra national de jazz

L’Orchestre’ national de jazz (ONJ) was founded in 2012 by director and producer Jacques Laurin, supported by Christine Jensen, Marianne Trudel, Jean-Pierre Zanella, Samuel Blais, André Leroux, Frank Lozano, Alexandre Côté, Jocelyn Couture, Aron Doyle, David Carbonneau, Bill Mahar, Dave Grott, David Martin, Jean-Nicolas Trottier, Bob Ellis, Rémi-Jean Le Blanc and Kevin Warren.

The ONJ is made up of some twenty regular musicians to which have been added to date more than one hundred of the best musicians in the country, a dozen renowned conductors and the participation of some of the most prestigious international artists.

Since its inception, the ONJ has focused its energies on developing the highest quality concert offerings, dedicated to the dissemination of the world orchestral repertoire of jazz music, while promoting the presentation of Canadian works.

Since its foundation, the ONJ has commissioned ten works from some of the best talents in the country: Marianne Trudel, Christine Jensen, Mireille Boily, Jean-Nicolas Trottier, John Hollenbeck, Joe Sullivan and Jean Derome, seven of whom have already been created as world premieres.

He subsequently published three albums of commissioned works: DANS LA FORÊT DE MA MÉMOIRE The Mystic Mind by Marianne Trudel, Under the Influence by Christine Jensen – Prix Opus 2018 Disc of the Year – and The Mystic Mind by Jean-Nicolas Trottier.

The ONJ also won the Prix Opus 2018 – Concert of the Year – under the direction of drummer and composer John Hollenbeck, featuring singer Theo Bleckmann at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

By the end of June 2020, the NYO will have given more than 45 concerts and performed more than 500 works from the repertoire of more than 60 national and international composers and arrangers.
