We are professional jazz orchestras in various cities across Canada dedicated to the promotion and development of big band jazz through performance, composition, recording and education.
This association focuses on professional, city-based jazz orchestras dedicated to the creation of artistic performances, recordings and compositions for big band.
Participating organizations are not vehicles for an individual big band leader or composer, but are committed to the presentation of a concert series that will contribute to the growth of its particular community, and to the growth of the art-form.
We intend to bring an awareness and connection between musicians and audiences throughout Canada, as well as develop ties beyond our borders. Part of our mandate is to encourage the formation of professional concert jazz orchestras in other Canadian cities.
The member ensembles of CAJO/AOJC:
- are composed of the top local professional musicians from the respective cities.
- present a regular series of concerts that reflect the diversity of approaches to big band performance and repertoire.
- aim to present the best big band jazz compositions and arrangements available: some very new, and some historically significant, with emphasis on Canadian repertoire
- are committed to the growth of the art form (big band jazz) in Canada
- are committed to developing an educational program in our respective cities
